JJ, yes, I was aware of the capacitor aging problems and have observed occasional evidence of this over the last three or so years with strange behavior, especially when the battery was not completely fully charged. Apr 23, 5. Ken, I took the unit apart and checked tape threading and alignment and everything looked good to me. Reinstall the battery, turn on the camcorder and see if it powers up. Alternately, plug the camcorder directly into the power adapter and turn it on. If it works, you may need a new battery.
If the camcorder turned itself off, understand that the power-save option may be kicking in. If you do not operate it for a few minutes or more, power save may put the camera into sleep mode. Turn the camera off and then on again, or press the "Record" button to see if it comes back on. If the camcorder does not stay on for long, check to see if the battery is low.

I had tried cleaning the heads over and over. I examined them with a 20x loupe and they looked fine. I doubt that the problem was oxide and debris build-up on the heads. I guess I don't need to do that now. Why did the slam technique work? Inside the rotating head, there must be some sort of electronic track like the brushes of a motor or something similar.. Some sort of debris must have been involved in a corruption of the transfer of impulses from the heads.
